Meet Sandra
This month, the 12th AG member we are highlighting is Sandra Hernandez! Sandra is the founder and the heart of the 12th AG Giving Circle.
She is a thoughtful leader who is truly passionate about giving. We are so excited for you to learn more about her!
How has being a part of the 12th AG community encouraged you?
I have been absolutely blown away by the level of support our giving circle has received so far. It’s no secret that Aggies are known for having a more… traditional culture, and it’s been such a gift to see progressive Aggies coming together to create solutions that address a very critical need in our community. I’m extremely proud and forever honored to be part of such a welcoming environment that embodies the Aggie Spirit by creating space for everyone.
What does it mean to you to be committed to creating a community that is diverse, equitable, and inclusive?
I recently had a conversation with a 12th AG member about knowing the difference between passion and purpose, and the clarity that comes with it. My passion is bringing people together for a common cause, my purpose is to invest in others and fight for the safety and growth of underrepresented communities. Our society depends on all of us taking care of each other, and for the amount of time that I have on this earth I will spend my life creating the necessary spaces for everyone to succeed.
What motivates you to contribute as part of a collective group, rather than solely as an individual?
Growing up, my family relied on the support of their own community giving circles to thrive financially– a system called a “tanda” in Spanish that my family is still a part of today. This grassroots giving circle operates by pooling member money together for an agreed to period of time and rotating the pot amongst members until every member has received the pool. This is essentially an interest-free short term loan that allows my community to invest in their health, create equity, and lift each other up while navigating being undocumented. When I first heard about Legacy Collective, I knew that I wanted to be part of the collective group that was giving their own resources for a similar mission and I wanted to keep growing the culture of investing in others.
